Google reviews statistics for UK clinics, salons and dental practices.

I looked at every Google listing for aesthetic and skin clinics, beauty salons and dental practices within 5 km of 14 UK city centres: 7,470 businesses in all. How many reviews they have, what they score, whether they link to a website, and whether anyone has claimed them.

What the data shows

Seven findings, in plain English.

  1. 01

    5.0 / 4.9 / 4.8

    Stars don't set anyone apart.

The middle rating is 5.0 for aesthetic and skin clinics, 4.9 for beauty salons and 4.8 for dental practices. 84% of all rated listings sit at 4.5 or above. When almost everyone is near five stars, the number of reviews is what a stranger can tell apart.

  2. 02

    45%

of listings have fewer than ten reviews.

And 21% have none at all. Across all 7,470 listings the middle business has 14 reviews.

  3. 03

    36 vs 2

Middle review count: listings with their own website against listings with none.

Businesses whose Google listing links to a website of their own have a median of 36 reviews. Those with no website link have 2. That is a correlation, not proof that a website brings reviews: established businesses tend to have both.

  4. 04

    60%

of beauty salons don't link to a website of their own.

44% list no website at all, 7% point to a page on a booking platform and 9% to a social media profile. Only 40% link to their own site. For aesthetic and skin clinics the own-website figure is 75%.

  5. 05

    24%

of listings look unclaimed by the owner.

Google still shows them, but nobody has verified them. The middle unclaimed listing has 0 reviews, against 26 for claimed ones. Dental practices have the highest unclaimed share, at 30%.

  6. 06

    45

Median reviews for a dental practice.

Against 14 for an aesthetic or skin clinic and 12 for a beauty salon. 38% of dental listings have 100 reviews or more, compared with 15% of clinics and 13% of salons.

  7. 07

    34% to 57%

Beauty salons with no website, from city to city.

Liverpool has the highest share of salon listings with no website link (57% of 283). Edinburgh has the lowest (34% of 214).

Reviews and websites

Listings with a website of their own have far more reviews.

Median Google review count, by what the listing's website link points to. All three business types, 7,470 listings.

  • Their own website 4,146 listings 36
  • A booking platform page 350 listings 16
  • A social media profile 413 listings 10
  • No website at all 2,561 listings 2
A correlation, not a cause: busier, longer-established businesses are more likely to have both a website and a long review history.

Each row is every listing of that type within 5 km of the city centre. Smaller cities mean smaller numbers, so a gap of a few points between two of them can be chance.

Dental practices

Google's "Dentist", "Dental clinic" and "Cosmetic dentist" categories. Most cities have fewer than 100 dental listings in the circle, so treat city differences here with care.

If you own one of these businesses

The gap is in the boring parts.

Nearly everyone is rated well, so a high star rating is the price of entry, not an advantage. What separates listings is the dull work: claiming the profile, linking it to a real website, and asking every happy client for a review, every time.

None of that guarantees where you appear on Google, and nobody honest will promise you a position. It does mean a stranger comparing three listings sees a business that is looked after. If you want to do it yourself, the guide to getting more Google reviews and the Business Profile checklist are free. If you would rather it was done for you, that is what my review funnel and Business Profile management are for.

How I did it

Method, and what the data can't tell you.

  • Source: DataForSEO Business Listings (Google Maps business profile data), pulled on 7 October 2026. This is the public information on each business's Google Maps listing, collected by DataForSEO.
  • Where: every listing within 5 km of the centre of Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham, Sheffield. That is a circle around each city centre, not the whole city or its suburbs, so it leans towards town-centre businesses.
  • Which businesses: listings whose main Google category is "Skin care clinic" or "Medical spa" (counted as aesthetic and skin clinics), "Beauty salon" (beauty salons), or "Dentist", "Dental clinic" or "Cosmetic dentist" (dental practices). A business that picked a different main category, such as a salon listed as a hairdresser, is not counted. Google has no separate "aesthetic clinic" category, which is why the two closest ones are used.
  • Left out: listings Google marks as permanently or temporarily closed, and duplicates of the same place.
  • Sample: 7,470 listings: 2,135 clinics, 4,124 salons and 1,211 dental practices. London accounts for a large share of each, so the overall figures lean towards London.
  • Website: the link shown on the Google listing. Links to booking platforms (such as Fresha or Treatwell pages) and to social media profiles are counted separately from a business's own site. A business can have a website it hasn't added to Google, and this data can't see that.
  • Unclaimed: DataForSEO's flag for whether the owner has verified the listing with Google. It reflects what Google shows publicly and can lag behind a recent claim.
  • Ratings and reviews: the star rating and review count on the listing on the day. Medians are the middle value, so one business with thousands of reviews doesn't skew them; averages are given beside them where useful.
  • Limits: one day's snapshot, Google's own categories (which owners choose themselves), and city-centre circles. It describes these listings, not every clinic, salon or practice in the UK.

The summary figures are in the city summary CSV. I'm happy to share how the figures were worked out with any journalist or researcher who asks.
